Istanbul: A City of Giants

Istanbul, historically known as Byzantium, Constantinople, and Islambol, is the largest city in Turkey and considered its economic, cultural, and historical center. It spans the Bosphorus Strait and is located in both Europe and Asia. With a population of over 15 million, it accounts for 19% of Turkey’s population, making it the most populous city in Europe and the 15th in the world.

The City of Two Continents

The city was founded as Byzantium in the 7th century BC by Greek settlers from Megara. In 330 AD, Roman Emperor Constantine the Great made it the capital of the empire, renaming it first to Nova Roma and then Constantinople. It grew in size and influence and became a beacon along the Silk Road.

The Epicenter of History

Over its long history, the city served as the capital of several empires: Roman (330–395), Byzantine (395–1204 and 1261–1453), Latin (1204–1261), and Ottoman (1453–1922). It was also a religious hub—important to Christians before becoming the capital of the Islamic Caliphate from 1517 to 1924.
